Safety Pilot

A safety pilot is a rated pilot who helps maintain visual separation from other aircraft, clouds, and terrain while another pilot is wearing view limiting devices for the purposes of simulating instrument conditions.

There is no official status of a safety pilot laid out in the CARS.

At Visions Flight Services, you can certainly hire an instructor to not only act as your safety pilot, but to offer training while you are “under the hood” as well.

Having a safety pilot on board isn’t only limited to hood work either. We have been hired to act as safety pilot for folks simply flying into unfamiliar territory, say a busy control zone when their previous experience was low traffic environments. Another use for a safety pilot is on a cross country, again to an unfamiliar location (mountain flying), or perhaps crossing the border for the first time…
