Private Pilot Licence

Transport Canada defines the minimum requirements for the Private Pilot Licence as follows:

  • 45 hours flight experience in an aircraft with a Certificate of Airworthiness.
  • The applicant must have completed a minimum of 17 hours dual training, which must include a 3 hours cross-country, 5 hours instrument time, and 12 hours solo flight time including 5 hours cross-country.
  • 40 hours private pilot aeroplane ground school instruction

The pre-requisites for this licence are:

  • 17 years of age (Student Pilot Permit can be issues at 14 years of age)
  • a valid Category 1, or Category 3 Medical Certificate

The minimum costs (from Visions Flight Services) to obtain this licence are:

17 hrs dual $850
12 hrs supervised solo $600
16 hrs of combined dual and supervised solo $800
Total * $2250

* These are the minimum fees that you would pay to us for the instructor’s time. All aircraft costs for the flight training are in addition to these numbers.

** The PPL does require written examinations for the PSTAR, radio operators certificate, and the PPAER. Also, there is a flight test, and finally an Aviation-Language Proficiency Test. All these will have their own additional fees associated with them.

*** TC currently charges $30 for their filing fees.
